San Jose, April 14th, 2026. Liberty and Starlink have signed an agreement to offer, for the first time in Costa Rica, satellite-to-mobile connectivity. This initiative aims to drive innovation in telecommunications and contribute to the advancement of connectivity in the country.
Thanks to this collaboration, the new service called Liberty-Starlink will allow both consumers and corporate clients to connect to data that delivers voice, video and messaging through apps, as well as text messaging from places where mobile coverage does not currently exist, such as rural, mountainous, or maritime areas, and even national parks. Customers will have access to select apps when the service launches and more will become available.
Liberty and Starlink are working together to launch this new offering in the second half of 2026.
This service relies on a constellation of 650 launched satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) that function as cell phone towers in space. These satellites connect directly to Liberty’s own 1,800 MHz frequency, enabling connectivity for phones equipped with 4G LTE technology.
Johanna Escobar, General Manager of Liberty, stated: “This agreement represents a significant step forward for the country. Being the first operator to offer Starlink Mobile reinforces our commitment to continue innovating and ensuring that people and businesses can stay connected throughout the national territory. We want to fulfill our purpose of Connecting Communities and ensure a vital service in people’s lives.”
The satellite-to-mobile service will be included at no additional cost in all Liberty postpaid plans and available on demand for prepaid customers. To use it, customers only need a phone compatible with 4G LTE technology. It is important to note that users must ensure they are in an open-sky area and avoid being inside a house or building to guarantee a direct connection.
One of the main benefits of this technology is safety. In cases of accidents, natural disasters, or emergencies—when terrestrial networks may not be operational—direct satellite communication will allow people to request help and stay in contact.
A recent example is the emergency connectivity enabled by Liberty’s parent company, Liberty Latin America, and Starlink for customers in Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa, allowing them to communicate through data and text messages using Starlink’s satellite technology. This pioneering collaboration in the Caribbean combined terrestrial and satellite networks to provide a communication “lifeline” during a critical moment, enabling people to stay in touch with their families and access critical communication services.
The service is also ideal for those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping, or simply spending time in remote areas away from the city.
With this new alliance, Liberty Costa Rica will ensure connectivity in areas where mobile coverage does not currently exist and expand communication possibilities throughout the national territory. This contributes to positioning Costa Rica as a regional leader in telecommunications innovation. The deployment of Starlink Mobile satellite connectivity reinforces the commitment of both companies to drive technological solutions that connect more people and communities.
